Betty Ruth Stockley Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Betty Stockley announces her passing, in Toronto, on July 16, 2025.

She is predeceased by her parents Mabel and Bert Stockley.

Leaving behind with many memories are her two sisters, Joan (Sterling), Eileen, brother David (Wavey), nieces and nephew Teresa, Crystal, and Jason and great nieces Hayley, Sarah and Callie. She also leaves Aunt Doris, Aunt Joan and a number of cousins and friends.

As a teen Betty was a librarian at the old library located on the South Side of Twillingate and was very active in the Salvation Army. After attending university, she became a teacher/principal at schools in Newfoundland before leaving for Toronto to continue her studies.

She became a counsellor at a home for unwed mothers in Toronto and later became the Administrator of a Sheltered Workshop which provided employment, education and recreation for psychiatric patients. She later became Director of the Department of Vocational and Rehabilitation Services at Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital.

Betty has been an educator, an author, a poet, a consultant in human relations, a lecturer, and a frequent radio and TV guest.

Betty was a Registered Psychotherapist. She started her own counselling service over 30 years ago and her life was dedicated to helping others. She thoroughly enjoyed her work. No matter the hour of the day or night she was willing to be there for her clients. They became like family.

Thanks to the amazing care of Doctors, Nurses and Special Aides at the Toronto General, Toronto Rehab, Toronto Western and Castleview Wychwood Towers who cared for her in her last months. Their unwavering support and constant communication gave us peace in knowing she was being looked after and treated with loving care. Also thanks to all who visited her.

A cremation will take place in Ontario and Betty will be coming home to rest beside her mom and dad.

Visitation will take place at the Isles Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 30th from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. A celebration of her life will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, July 31st at 11:00am.
