Sarah Scott Stockley was born on July 26, 1982, the firstborn daughter to Cecil and Eleanor Cameron-Stockley. Sarah grew up on the stark and stunning shores of Twillingate, Newfoundland, the beauty of which would become one of her inspirations as a visual artist. With her white-blonde hair, her father, Cecil, called her his “angel.” Her three younger sisters idolized her growing up, and she taught them how to be bold and the importance of individuality; something she maintained throughout her entire life.
Sarah was a creative and an artist: from a young age, she loved to teach art to her younger sisters, cousins and friends, and ensured that there was an art project on the kitchen table at all times. The walls, windows and Christmas trees at the Stockley house were always covered with her artwork. To this day, her paintings, her main artistic medium, can be found proudly displayed in her family home, her sisters’ and friends’ homes, The Iceberg Shop, the Durrell Museum with the great auk exhibit mural, and on many other walls in Twillingate and beyond. Her signature “SSS” can be found at the bottom right corner of all of her pieces. Her biggest mural, “the happy face Berg” completed in 2017 can be found on The Iceberg Shop.
She was a gifted musician as a singer and songwriter. She had an excellent ear for music, learning and performing songs – written by herself or others – throughout her life. During her 20s, she lived in St. John’s and played in different bands, most notably in Dow Jones and the Stock Exchange and South Symposium. She always reflected on this time of her life with love and gratitude. Most recently in Twillingate in 2025, she was overjoyed to be a part of a project “Twillingreat” for the RPM challenge whereby she helped write and record two songs, “Doubt” with her daughter, Olivia, and “You Fellers.”
Sarah’s artistic ability also flowed into her cooking, which was a passion that came about during motherhood. She showed her love to her family and friends with food which was as delicious as it was artfully presented. When cooking for Ethan, Olivia and her family, no amount of effort to prepare a meal was too much, and she loved preparing and gifting trays of Christmas cookies each year. To their delight, she often shared her recipes and her tips and tricks with her mom, sisters and friends.
She also loved stories – both reading and writing. There was not a Stephen King book she hadn’t read, and she was also a talented short story writer. Her love of literature brought her to sit on the Library Board, previously attending and contributing at the Newfoundland and Labrador provincial meeting.
She has been described as kind, nonjudgmental, empathetic, compassionate, intelligent, funny, talented, unique, quirky, and thoughtful. She was a loyal friend, sister and daughter and a keen conversationalist. She cared deeply for others and always made time to talk to anyone. In high school, she loved spending time with her close friends, which also included her basketball team. She was often awarded “most sportsmanlike,” even then, owing to her big heart and love for others. As an adult, she was friends with everyone in the community and supported all in their pursuits. The words “I love you” came easily for Sarah, and she always made room in her heart for anyone that needed it.
Sarah’s greatest joy and her true vocation was being a mother to her two children, Ethan and Olivia, who were loved by her beyond measure. She was always ready to attend a basketball game or sea cadets march for Ethan, or Olivia’s activities at the rink or school, always helping with the drama festival, arts projects, or whatever other extracurricular activities needed parental support. Both Olivia and Ethan understand things like the colour wheel and sketching, or how to make beautiful melodies through singing or on the piano or guitar, or how to cook a number of incredible dishes. Most importantly, however, they both have been raised to be caring, open-minded, thoughtful and loving – a true reflection of the gifts that Sarah gave to this world.
Sarah will be forever loved and deeply missed by Ethan, Olivia and their cat Plucky; her father, Cecil; the Stockley girls, Rebekah (Matt), Emily (Daniel), and Cecily (Dylan); her many cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. She is predeceased by her mother, Eleanor Cameron-Stockley.
We love you forever.
