Olive Louise Gillard Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that the family of Olive Gillard announce her passing on January 1, 2026, at the Notre Dame Bay Memorial Health Centre, Twillingate, NL, at the age of 97.


For many years, Olive worked at The Telegram office, which she left in 1951 when she got married and moved to Gillard’s Cove, where she and her husband operated a grocery store until 1980.


Olive was predeceased by her parents, Stewart and Nina Young; husband, Wilfred Gillard; infant son; grandson Andrew Short; sisters Florence (Roy) Mercer and Shirley (Maxwell) Elliott, half-brother Horatio (Mabel) Hurley ; parents-in-law, Arthur and Dora Gillard; sisters-in-law Meta (Harvey) Earle and Mary Woodford; brothers-in-law Alonzo (Marjorie) Gillard and Thurman (Marjorie) Gillard; sons-in-law Robert Short and James Creelman.


She leaves to mourn her daughters Marina, Marilyn, and Gloria (Derrick); grandchildren Shelley, Scott, Heather, and Tyler; great-grandchildren Madison, Caleigh, Jace, Ruby, Wyatt, and Penny; as well as many nieces and nephews.


The family wish to thank her home care workers over the years, with a special thank you to Velda Hynes, and her nephew Paul Elliott for all that they have done for her. We would also like to thank her nieces Florence and Maisie, who were with her in her last days. A heartfelt thank you as well to the staff of Sunset Manor for taking such wonderful care of her, and the staff of Notre Dame Bay Memorial Hospital while she was there.
