I spent many a quarter in Bert's shop when I was a kid. Couldn't wait to run across the road from the Durrell Academy to see Bert and buy some candy. Bert would sometimes have different candy than Bert Stuckless's or Simm's shop. It was quite something to get that quarter and go back to the playground and hang out on the swings eating your bounty. That quarter could buy you your world for the day. He was such a big man to me. Towering over the counter. He was important. Papa called him the town merchant. He was rich! Chuckle...yes, compared to us he was a wealthy man. It garnered respect. As an adult I now know that he wasn't a wealthy man in monetary tones per se, but a man that worked very hard every day to take care of his family and to provide generously. He spent his days in that shop, or on the water fishing. I'm sure that he must have so tired some days. But I never saw him complain. He always had a smile and a quiet humbleness. Yes, he was indeed rich. And he was wealthy. His wealth came from internal. I also remember how much Bert loved his dogs. People that love dogs are special people. I have had very little contact with Bert in the last 25 years, however I do remember his kind demeanour and his tanned face in the summer time after spending his days on the water fishing. Children do not forget. You will always be the town merchant to me Bert. Much respect to you sir. Sending my deepest sympathy and regards to all of Bert's family. Niece Darlene Mitchell Toronto, Ontario.
