Obituary of Ernest W. Manuel

Ernest Manuel, 84, of Twillingate, Newfoundland, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at Notre Dame Bay Memorial Health Centre. Born in Twillingate to John and Daisy (Anstey) Manuel, Ernie was inspired by his father at a young age to follow his father’s footsteps into the family grocery and dry goods business. As a young adult Ernie met the love of his life, Hettie (Greenham) and they were married in 1956. Ernie was a strong, kind, loving and supportive husband and father to 3 children - Ella (Watkins), Sandra, and John. In 1977 after his father’s passing, Ernie assumed ownership of the Manuel family business, and along with Hettie working by his side, expanded the business and employed many in the community. Ernie was a generous and caring employer, supporting those who he did not just consider employees, but also his friends, in countless ways over the years. Many of these friendships became lifelong, that he continued to cherish deeply. During these years, Ernie also demonstrated his love for the community devoting countless hours and financial support to many causes, especially St. Peter’s Anglican Church, the Hospital Board, and The Twillingate Fire Department. After retirement, Ernie, along with Hettie, remained active community members for many years, while also turning their focus to travelling with John, to spend time with family and friends, especially in Ontario with Melanie, her husband Robert, and grandchildren Robbie, Austin and Ayonna. Ernie was able to enjoy these trips right up until 2020 and he cherished every moment. For 20 months Ernie battled Congestive Heart Failure among other complications. His strength and determination saw him through many challenges during this time. He will be greatly missed by family and friends, and his contributions to his community will always be remembered. Ernie is predeceased by his parents John and Daisy, and Daughters Ella and Sandra. He leaves to mourn his wife of 65 years, Hettie, as well as son, John, granddaughter Melanie (Robert) Hann, and great-grandchildren Robbie, Austin and Ayonna, as well as his brother, Arthur, and many extended family members and friends. In light of the current Covid-19 pandemic, the health and safety of our families and our community continues to be our highest priority. At this time, there will be a public visitation from the Isles Funeral Home, Twillingate on Wednesday evening from 7-9pm. A funeral service by invitation only, will take place from St. Peter’s Anglican Church on Thursday Aug 19, 2021 at 2pm; with Rev. Daphne Parsons officiating. Donations in Ernie’s honor may be given to the family in support of the Twillingate Volunteer Fire Department or the Notre Dame Bay Memorial Health Centre, towards the purchase of a wheelchair for the hospital.
