Obituary of Roland Harry Smith

It is with great sadness that the family of Roland Harry Smith announce his passing on July 17, 2024, at the James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander at the age of 91 years. Roland was born on September 2, 1932, to Walter and Hettie Smith. After the death of his mother when he was a young boy, he went to live with his aunt and uncle, George and Elemena Greenham. In 1961, he married his beautiful wife, Nina, and together they raised three children. Roland was a hard worker all his life, at the age of 15 years he left home to work in the woods and this was the start of many years working in the pulp and paper industry. This job took him from Central Newfoundland to Goose Bay, Labrador then back to St. Albans. They eventually moved back to Little Harbour, and he worked in construction until his retirement. Roland loved being outdoors. He enjoyed cutting his own wood, moose hunting, berry picking, setting his gardens every Spring, woodworking and attending his church. He was a devoted family man who adored his grandchildren, great grand children and always enjoyed their visits. He loved people and always enjoyed a chat with his neighbours and the many tourists that frequented the Harbour over the years. Roland is predeceased by his parents Walter and Hettie Smith, stepparents George and Elemena Greenham, brothers Howard, Leonard, and Robert, his sister and brother-in-law Thurman and Marjorie Gillard. Roland leaves with fond and loving memories his wife of 63 years, Nina.
