I remember Uncle Melv from our trips to Twillingate during my childhood. He would always come out when he saw us exploring his stage and happily show us around, often taking us for a boat ride and helping us catch some crabs. He was always so kind and friendly, and showed such pride in his collection of fishing equipment, old pictures and pens from all over the world! His welcoming attitude and friendly smile will be missed on my next trip to Twillingate. My condolences to his family.

I remember walking down the lane to visit him while I was in NFLD seeing family with my parents and sister. It was always a highlight of our summer trip. I appreciated how generous he was with his time and attention to us kids. RIP.

Our condolences to the Howood family:Every one recognizes Melvin’s contribution to tourism in Twillingate and his effort to preserve the history and culture(particularly the fishing industry) through his museum! But we like to recognize as well the thousands of times he lifted up his hand in a friendly greeting to all who passed him on the road that ran by his wharf...residents and tourists alike! Our prayers are with you as you mourn and celebrate his life!

My sincere condolences to the family on the loss of "Uncle Melv". I have many fond memories of visiting Twillingate each summer and Melv taking me and my daughters out on the ocean for a boat ride to see the local sights and catch some cod. The visit would end with catching some crabs on the wharf and a tour of his museum where he kept lots of interesting items, pictures and vintage stuff to look at. He would always be cheerful, take an interest in our lives and have a funny story to tell. Melv was always inquisitive and interesting to talk to. I still have his "local fisherman" card somewhere in my desk. I will never forget his kindness and generous nature.

I was so saddened when I heard the passing of Uncle Melv. My memories of Melv go back to the days when the Horwood trap skiff would be puttering in the “arm”. I’d be waiting to throw the fish in the stage and cut cod tongues. The splitting table was an assembly line with Melv, Ralph, grandfather and my dad Jim. It was a site for sore eyes. I always said that Uncle Melv had a PhD in the cod fishery and the loss of the cod.
Melv had a good life. Married so long to a lovely Aunt Marjorie. Lovely family. Lovely home.
If there’s a heaven, can you imagine how he was welcomed. I can see the trumpets playing as he arrives. And angels flocking in white.
We will all follow the same path of dying… we won’t avoid it.
Goodbye Uncle Melv. You will be missed by many people on the wharf.
Condolences to the family. I know the pain and the grief from loss of a father.
He will never leave your heart. Photos and memories will be shared for a lifetime.
Death of a parent changes things.
RIP Uncle Melv. Say hello to my mom and dad.
