Melvin Horwood

Obituary of Melvin Junior Horwood

Melvin Junior Horwood May 26, 1931 – Dec 7, 2022 Melvin was born on May 26, 1931, to Annie (Greenham) and John Horwood of Durrell, NL. He began working at a young age alongside his father and brothers in the fishing industry. During his teenage years, Melvin spent the summers hauling cod traps and splitting fish, then spent the winters working in the lumber woods cutting logs for the papermills. On March 11, 1952, Melvin married his wife, Marjorie Leona Jenkins of Durrell. Together they built a loving home and raised three children, Harvey, Christine, and Roseann. A change of career came when Melvin began working for Canada Post at the office in Durrell from 1968 until 1988. However, he remained connected to the fishery by working evenings and weekends fishing gillnets with Marjorie. After the cod fishery ended in 1992, Melvin used his wharf and stage as a private museum where he entertained tens of thousands of tourists over the years. Visitors from around the world enjoyed listening to his many stories and learning about Newfoundland culture. Prior to moving into long term care this Fall, he was able to live comfortably in his home thanks to the assistance provided by wonderful Homecare Workers. Melvin was predeceased by: Parents John and Annie Horwood; Brothers James (Rowena) and Ralph (Marion) Horwood; Sister Ruby (Roy) Watkins; Brother-in-law Hubert Jenkins; Son Harvey Horwood; Grandson Bobby Pelley. Melvin leaves to mourn with fond and loving memory: Wife of seventy years Marjorie; Sister Marjorie Jenkins; Daughters Christine (Jim) Pelley and Roseann (Howard) Lewis; Daughter-in-law Joan Horwood; Grandchildren Jason (Tonya) and (Melissa) Pelley, Scot (Michelle) and Stephen (Jennifer) Lewis, Terry (Gerri), Trevor (Crystal), and Todd (Lindsay) Horwood; Great-Grandchildren Andrew, Alex, Avery, Nathan, Ella, Tyler, Aaron, Abigail, Ashton, Hannah, Emily, and Isaac.
